Walk on Earth a Stranger, by Rae Carson

Lee Carson helps her family survive on their dwindling gold stake in Georgia, using a special talent to sense gold. She also transcends the traditional role of a girl with taking on the farm chores and hunting.  When tales of the discovery of gold in California, start the gold rush and people begin migrating west, her parents are brutally murdered.  Lee is forced to survive on her own.  This historical fiction will attract fans of titles like Little House on the Prairie, looking for thrills related to traveling the wild west.  It is geared towards a teen/young adult audience, but definitely enjoyable for an adult audience too!
