A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Do you still believe in the possibility of magic and romance?  If so this story is for you.  It starts out at Oxford University with the central character, Diana Bishop an historian and witch in denial, stumbling upon a long lost magical manuscript.  This accidental discovery puts Diana into danger, that she is poorly equipped to handle due to a strong rejection of her own magical talents.  She finds an unlikely ally and romantic interest in a vampire.  Since witches and vampires are forbidden to mix, their relationship triggers a “race” war.  A Discovery of Witches will beguile readers with action, adventure, interesting historical asides, time-travel, fast paced romance and the supernatural.  It is slightly reminiscent of the Twilight series, but is much more sophisticated.
