Many people have asked about the oversized book in fornt of the library, wondering what it is and how long it will be there. One of our patrons, Aidan Corish, spoke to board member Craig Rhodes about our Capital Campaign.  Craig said we were thinking of putting up some kind of fundraising thermometer to measure our progress. But Aidan had a better spin on the idea. For a library, why not books, with a new title added to the stack every time a milestone—in this case, $200,000–was reached. Not only that, but Aidan would have his firm, Tangram International, design, produce, donate, and install the piece. Next thing I knew it was in place –with the first title, Great Expectations appropriately indicating the hopes we have that our newest Capital Campaign goal of $1,000,000 will be accomplished. For those of you counting: That’s five books, each a different color, and Aidan has designed them so they can be re-used in the children’s room as seating and bookshelves.

I have said before that I am not a natural fundraiser, but I do believe in the power of a library to foster a strong community. And so do the gernerous people of Sag Harbor. In addition to our successful 2009 referendum vote for roughly $10,000,000, we have raised an additional $2.7 million  in grants, pledges and direct donations. Those donations have included yard sale and lemonade stand proceeds. Funds from the Sag Harbor Schools’ yearly Multicultural Feast were contributed to the library, as were funds from a book sale. Our “One for the Books!” events have raised more than $200,000, and made for a fair number of lively and interesting dinner and cocktail parties over the years. Thanks to the hosts, guests, and volunteer committee led by Gail Slevin, for making this possible.

My thanks as well to all of you who have contributed to our Annual Appeal fund drive.  This year, instead of a separate printing and mailing, I am putting our request for funds here on the front page of the newsletter. You can donate online at johnjermain.org, or by mail, or—my choice—by stopping by to get an update on the building project, that way I can thank you personally for your gift (which is 100% tax-deductible, by law).

One donor to our Annual Appeal is Priscilla Ciccariello, retired reference librarian and community activist. At some point before I even started working at the library she made a donation for the “first brick” of the restoration, because she believed in John Jermain. I hope you will join her in shaping and celebrating our future.

Donating is as easy as clicking here or on the “Donate Now” button in the right hand column, or you can mail a check to:

The John Jermain Memorial Library is the public library in Sag Harbor, NY. Founded in 1910, the library building and initial collection was a gift from Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage to the people of Sag Harbor. From June 2011 to July 2013 the library will be located at 34 W. Water St., in Sag Harbor, while our historic building is renovated and expanded.
