NYS Makes Tablets Available for Your Use

Through a generous grant program from New York State and Google, every library on Long Island received at least one Nexus 7 android tablet for the purpose of making them available to the public to use. John Jermain got two, some libraries more, a few less. Our two spanking new 7″ tablets running the latest version of the Android operating system, and loaded with useful, interesting and fun apps, are ready for you to use right now. One is dedicated for use by patrons while visiting the library, and the other is available to be checked out with your library card (adults only), and taken home. The loan period is three days, with two possible renewals, for a maximum loan of 9 days.

Nexus 7 Tablet

The Nexus 7 Android tablet from Google is available at JJML for patron use.

Each tablet is encased in a strong protective shell called an “Otter Box,” which protects them from casual damage, so if you think of yourself as a “butter-fingers,” don’t worry, the devices can withstand most bumps and drops.

Whether you’re an experienced tablet user, or have never held one in your hands before, there are plenty of reasons to you might want to check out one of these Nexus 7s.

  • New to tablets?  Here’s your chance to find out why everyone’s so excited about them.
  • Experienced user? Get a look at the latest and greatest hardware and software from Google.
  • Explore the area with apps like Around Me, Yelp, and Google Earth
  • Read a good book — JJML’s entire collection of e-books (from our Kindles and Nooks) is also on the Nexus 7
  • Tap into library resources like Mango Languages, and more.
  • Make a video call using Skype.

Both New York State, and the John Jermain library would really love to see these get used to the max, so don’t be shy about coming in and asking to use one or take one home. That’s why they’re here. The one that can be checked out is at the main circulation desk. The one for in-library use is in the children’s department. (We thought that parents in the library might enjoy having it available to them while their kids are using our iPads….library card required.)

The John Jermain Memorial Library is the public library in Sag Harbor, NY. Founded in 1910, the library building and initial collection was a gift from Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage to the people of Sag Harbor. From June 2011 to July 2013 the library will be located at 34 W. Water St., in Sag Harbor, while our historic building is renovated and expanded.
